NucliCem
NucliCem the solution for radioactive problems
NucliCem is a special blend of selected natural and synthetic zeolites and an activator developed by PowerCem Technologies. NucliCem is developed to provide a solution for radioactive waste. It can be used alone or in combination with any suitable type of binder in order to create a stabile matrix for low to high radioactive substances. Natural and synthetic zeolites have a high ion exchange capacity and a particular affinity for heavy metal cations. They can absorb elements such as Strontium 90, Caesium 137 and other radioactive isotopes, and hold them in its 3 dimensional crystal framework. NucliCem reacts readily with cement and glass systems thus allowing the radioactive waste to be entrapped and contained safely.
Innovative characteristics
NucliCem is physically robust and resistant to nuclear degradation, and is less expensive than organic ion exchange resins in field applications. NucliCem utilizes zeolite properties and further enhances them to deliver effective radioactive waste management solutions. NucliCem can also be used in construction of permeable reactive barriers to selectively contain radioactive contaminants that are percolating from shallow land burial sites of low-level radioactive waste. NucliCem combines with clays and other materials and delays the migration of leachate for a period long enough to allow exchange and/or decay of radioactive ions. NucliCem can be used to trap volatile radioactive gases in off-gas systems. NucliCem absorber beds and filters can be installed as an integral part of most radioactive waste control systems.
Significant properties of NucliCem for radioactive waste treatment include the following: High cation exchange capacity (CEC), selectivity for specific radioactive substances by design, radiation stability and resistance to mechanical attrition.
NucliCem is manufactured in The Netherlands according to ISO 9001 and ISO 14002.
Environment friendly
NucliCem can be used as a permeable reactive barrier for remediation efforts to capture dissolved radioactive waste. It can selectively contain the contaminants that are percolating from shallow land burial sites of low-level radioactive waste by having the contaminant pass through an underground NucliCem wall. NucliCem will hold the radioactive waste into its matrix while allowing clean water to pass through it. NucliCem can also impede (slow down) the migration of radioactive leachate for a period of time to allow exchange or natural decay of radioactive ions. Fine grain NucliCem can be combined as a mixture with clay and other materials for such applications.
Technical aspects that counts
NucliCem is able to cleanup inactive uranium processing sites and associated 'vicinity properties.' NucliCem is also able to stabilize and control uranium mill tailing piles and other residual radioactive materials. NucliCem stabilized matrix has a high heat resistance and a high insulation value.
NucliCem is used in dosages from 3 - 20kg/m3 polluted material with or without the additional binder (OPC/PFA etc.) depending on the degree of 'pollution'.
