Canada - City of Calgary
The City of Calgary built a Streets and Roads Maintenance depot on 40th Street NE between 67th Avenue and 80th Avenue NE. This area has a high water table and floods every spring leaving very harsh road conditions requiring costly repair. There was a concern about the existing road being able to handle the increased loads in and out of the new depot.
PowerCem Canada introduced PowerCem™® Technologies RoadCem™® stabilization process to The City of Calgary as an alternative to standard construction methods where aggregate is in short supply, where rainfall and flooding water causes local soils to lose load bearing capacity and/or where normal road construction costs are becoming prohibitive.
The City of Calgary chose the PowerCem™® Technologies solution for 40th Street NE (13,000 m2) that began August 15th through to August 17th 2007. Once the project began it was quickly determined that this solution was also ideal for full depth reclamation and the project grew (6,500 m2) to include 80th Avenue NE between 36th Street and Metis Trail NE which was completed in a single day on August 18th, 2007.
- The City Of Calgary benefited as construction time was reduced by 300% but most importantly recycling costs were reduced by 100% by not having to dig and remove the old pavement.
- The design solution created a 12" matrix with the addition of a Flyash/ RoadCem™®/Cement mixture building an in-situ recycled base that is stronger, more uniform and more moisture resistant than the original base.
- Additional cost savings were realized as the new stabilized base only required a limited amount of surface wear finish consisting of recycled 1inch asphalt on 40th Street NE and 1 inch lift of commercial B hot-mix asphalt on 80th Avenue NE which completed the road.
- Both RoadCem™® treated roads are handling the heavier loads without any visible problems thus far.
