Platform logistic center

Country
: Ecuador
Location
: Block 31
Year
: 2014
Product
: RoadCem

In the Amazon area of eastern Ecuador, on the shores of the Napa River, a logistics facility centre of an oil and gas company is constructed. At this logistics centre, the soil is stabilised with RoadCem. The technical demands of the construction are that it must be able to bear high loads, such as heavy construction vehicles and the storages of steel pipes.

For the client, it is important that a reliable, high quality pavement construction is constructed with economic and environmental advantages compared with the traditional construction method.

The location of the logistics centre is in an area where the conditions for pavement construction are difficult. Due to the climatic conditions, there are weak subsoils and limited transportation abilities.
The climatic conditions are harsh, due to the heavy rain that is unpredictable making it difficult on a daily basis to sufficiently compact the road foundation construction.
The laterite soil is very weak, especially when the soil is saturated. This means that with a traditional pavement construction, a large amount of gravel and sand need to be used to construct the traditional pavement.

Due to the distance of the quarry (from the Andes), and the only possibility of transportation via the river, the transportation costs are very high.
The pavement structure for the logistics facility centre, 10,000 m2, was constructed in a few days. The RoadCem stabilisation has a thickness of 0.25 m.

RoadCem stabilisation is impermeable and flexural enough to bear tensile forces, and no cracks will occur. The subsoil under the RoadCem remains dry, and under dry conditions the sub soil has a higher bearing capacity. Therefore, a RoadCem stabilisation thickness of 0.25 m is sufficient enough to bear the high forces.

The soil was mixed with RoadCem and cement and after 48 hours the pavement structure was in use.

Due to a specific modification of the cement hydration process by using RoadCem, the stabilised material has a neutral pH level. This means that by crushing this material it can be left in nature and no excavation needs to be done.
