The local municipality Merafong City has an active policy in developing the infrastructure tracing the most durable system with the maximum cost effective impact. The local authorities contracted the Witwatersrand University in order to study the most effective method in order to develop the infrastructure in a durable and cost effective approach.
On base of intensive study, visiting projects and finalizing research, RoadCem (PowerCem based Technology) was chosen as the effective medium and holistic solution for a number of construction applications.
The Danie Theron road was demonstrating that the existing dirt road can be changed in a durable monolithically construction with a thin asphalt layer on top. The road is designed for a lifetime cycle of 20 years with a safety factor of 2 and is constructed by labor intensive method. The mechanical contribution was limited to the absolute minimum in spite of job creating. However, even with labor intensive approach 150-300m a day can be realized depending of the matrix. This in comparison with fully mechanized equipment which can execute easily approx. 1km a day comparing the Danie Theron road.
The chosen construction was 250mm RoadCem stabilization + 30mm asphalt on top as wearing course connected to the RoadCem stabilization.
